The sexual revolution has not yet arrived in Vietnam or I think it arrived during the sixties and promptly departed on the last American chpper inn 1975. A large proportion of women work outside the home, however, you will find that women are still considered secon- class citizens is social situations. I have been entertained in several Vietnamese hoomes where the men talked, drank and dined for hours, while the women were relegated to the kitchen, even during dinner. You can not understand the Vietnamese people until you first understand the importance of the family. As in many other Asian countries, family is the foundation of Vietnamese society. Many families have three generations living under one roof. Today, more and more are choosing to move into their own homes when they are married.
It is traditional for a married couple to care for the man's parents. That why it is important to have a son! If there is only is one son, then he and his wife must live with his parents. If there are no sons, one of the daughters may remain unmarried and care for her parent. Decision-making is a family affair like when you gett to 21 and your parents are making the decision for you, but in the U.S.A, wheen you turn to 18, you can make the decisions for yourself. That is the different culture from Vietnam and America.
